🚗 Eligibility Criteria

 

To become an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI), you must:

Be at least 21 years old

Hold a full UK or EU driving licence for at least 3 years

Have no more than 6 penalty points on your licence

Pass an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check

Additionally, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) assesses whether you are a 'fit and proper' person to teach driving, considering factors like motoring offences, criminal convictions, and bans from working with children under 18 .

 

 

📝 Application Process

 

The standard process to qualify as an ADI involves:

Theory Test (ADI Part 1) – A multiple-choice and hazard perception test.

Driving Ability Test (ADI Part 2) – A practical driving test.

Instructional Ability Test (ADI Part 3) – An in-car teaching assessment .

You can also apply for a trainee licence after passing Part 2, allowing you to teach under supervision while gaining experience before taking Part 3 .
