About the Pass Plus scheme

Secondary schools in High Wycombe, Marlow, Amersham, Chesham, Aylesbury and Buckingham can help to improve road safety for their students by hosting a driver training workshop on school premises and during the school day. In fact, any secondary schools in the Buckinghamshire County Council local authority area can become involved.

The Get in Gear Driving Course

The Transport for Buckinghamshire Road Safety team (Bucks County Council) is making a request to all Buckinghamshire based schools to help support the Get in Gear Young Driver Road Safety programme for young drivers.

The Get in Gear driving course is aimed at 17 – 24–year olds who are resident within the Bucks County Council local authority area and who have passed their driving test within the past 12–months. Students who live in places such as Thame, Milton Keynes, Bicester and other towns and villages bordering on the Local Authority Area can also be eligible, if they drive themselves to schools in Bucks.

The driving course comprises of three modules. This first of these is a 2–hour theory session, followed by two 2–hour practical advanced driver training sessions. It is the hosting of the theory session which the Council is seeking support of the schools.

Other Schools Have Realised the Benefit

Already, a number of the theory sessions have been staged at Buckinghamshire based schools and very successfully. These have been conducted at Aylesbury High School, Waddesdon Church of England School, Sir William Ramsay’s at High Wycombe and Sir William Borlaise at Marlow. Burnham Grammar School have also been involved.

On occasions, Aylesbury Grammar and the neighbouring High School, share the Get in Gear driving course theory lessons, a systemt that works well.

The theory class of the driving course is delivered by a member of the Get in Gear training team, so there are no demands placed upon members of school staff. Even the use of school IT equipment is not required, as everything needed to deliver the theory class is provided by the Get in Gear driving course presenter. The two practical driver training sessions are to be completed out of school hours.

Schools Can Play a Major Role to Improve Young Driver Safety

If students are given time to attend the first stage of the driving course during school hours this does help to generate interest in the course. Its helps also to dismantle barriers and provides the training team with an opportunity to show how road safety, as well as driver training, can actually be a lot of fun.

The driving course is being funded by the Local Authority and therefore students can complete the training completely free of charge. However, this is for a limited period only.

If your school is unable to host a Get in Gear theory class it is asked that consideration be given to providing support through publicising the driving course. This can be done by making available advertising materiel to pupils, material supplied by the road safety.

Please bear in mind that young drivers are over represented as a group of people who are killed and injured on Buckinghamshire roads each year. It would be really great if Buckinghamshire schools could help to change that.

For further information about how your school can arrange to host a Get in Gear driving course theory lesson, please contact June Howlett of the Transport for Buckinghamshire Road Safety Team on Aylesbury (01296) 382338, or by Email.
