Driving In Buckinghamshire

The stunningly beautiful county of Buckinghamshire has much to offer travellers of all ages and is an ideal area to tour by car in order to fully appreciate the scenery. The Chilterns, in which many fascinating destinations are nestled, is a designated area of outstanding natural beauty and with good reason. Taking in parts of the River Thames and glorious parklands and gardens, Buckinghamshire is a real feast for the eyes.
For those interested in history, Buckinghamshire offers a wealth of very different experiences. From National Trust properties like Claydon House, the family seat in the 1750’s of Sir Ralph Verney, to the Old Gaol in Buckingham, once the County Town, there is something to satisfy all historical appetites.
Milton Keynes Museum will let you trace the history of the Buckinghamshire area from Viking times while the museum at Amersham, set in a wonderful example of a 15th century merchant hall, shows off the skilled crafting heritage of the area including lace–making and painting.
The Wycombe Museum at High Wycombe is set in a fine 18th Century manor house with well kept expansive lawns. Furniture making was once a thriving industry in the area and the museum is home to a well known and unique collection of beautifully made Windsor chairs. The Chiltern Open Air Museum allows visitors to really experience life at different times through history, from an Iron Age house to a Victorian farm. The animals and collections of period farm tools make it an experience not to forget.
Starting in his home town of Great Missenden, tourists to the area can follow the Roald Dahl trail and visit places that would have been well known and loved by the world famous author. In Great Missenden itself children (and adults) of all ages can enjoy the Roald Dahl Museum with its interactive story centre. For those who like stories of a different kind, a trail designed around locations used in the filming of the infamous television series ‘Midsomer Murders’ makes for an interesting drive.
Unsurprisingly, given the surrounding countryside, Buckinghamshire boasts some of the country’s finest gardens. Mary Anne Disraeli designed a retreat for her husband, Benjamin, to escape from parliamentary life in the 1860’s. Thanks to painstaking work, visitors can once again marvel at the gardens at Hughenden Manor in High Wycombe. The formal gardens and orchards of heritage varieties of apples and pears are a real treat.
Near Aylesbury, Waddesdon Manor, bequeathed to the National Trust by the Rothschild family, also offers visitors lovely Victorian gardens and an aviary known for breeding exotic and endangered species of bird.
Fresh air and country houses are not for everyone and Buckinghamshire offers those needing some retail therapy every opportunity to indulge themselves. Chesham is a town with a twice–weekly general market and local produce market once a month. Aylesbury and High Wycombe are picturesque and steeped in market town history with many fine examples of Georgian buildings. All the market towns of the area sport a good mix of well known High Street names and brands to market stalls and individual retailers.
If you prefer a large, modern shopping centre then you need look no further than Buckinghamshire. High Wycombe offers the Eden Shopping Centre, while the Milton Keynes Shopping Centre boasts more than 190 outlets and is the biggest centre in the area.
After a hard day sight–seeing or shopping tourists can relax at a number of excellent eating establishments and award–winning pubs to recoup their energy before heading for home.
All the towns in the county are served by good main roads and travelling by car makes perfect sense. Buckinghamshire can be reached from all areas of the country, with the M40, M1 and M25, all passing nearby and good links from there from the M3 and M4. For those without a car, or not wishing to use their own for travelling, then try car hire at Luton for the model you need to visit these wonderful towns.
